Officers will be watching out for drunk drivers during Fiesta

They want to ensure everyone stays safe during Fiesta and parties responsibly.

SAN ANTONIO —

Fiesta kicks off Thursday and officials want to remind you to party responsibly.

Law enforcement agenices are stepping up patrols to help keep everyone safe over the next 10 days.

The SAPD Fiesta Incident Commander says the dedicated unit will be pulling extra duty during Fiesta to make sure they have more officers on the streets.

Captain Micheal Starnes with SAPD is reminding folks to make a plan before heading out to Fiesta and get a sober ride home, whether that’s from a cab, a Lyft, Uber or a friend.

Statistics from SAPD shows DWI arrests have decreased.

Last year, 154 arrests were made, compared to 164 in 2021 and a high of 220 back in 2018.

Officers will be watching people before they get behind the wheel.

Mark Menn with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission says they’ve also been meeting with businesses who plan to serve alcohol.

The commission is making sure each businesses and non-profit knows how to spot signs of intoxication and avoid selling to minors.

Businesses who break the law could have their permit taken away or face prosecution.

But SAPD says people need to be responsible too.

“Sometimes people do drink a little more than what's expected. So, I mean we would urge definitely have a fun time of course – but try to limit your drinking or have a safe method to get home."

Law enforcement, MADD and county leaders hope you will abide by this year’s slogan “Fiesta safe, fiesta sober.”
