Fiesta begins! And everything else happening in San Antonio this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — The sun might be eluding San Antonio as of late, but rain, gloom or shine, Fiesta is returning to the Alamo City in full force this weekend.

Those looking to avoid the intimidating crowds, however, aren't at a loss for options for weekend happenings, whether they be on the concert stage, theater stage or orchestra stage. Read on for more....

Kicking off San Antonio's party with a purpose...

Take your pick! The opening weekend of Fiesta features event all over the Alamo City, including Oyster Bake and A Taste of New Orleans for the culinarily inclined. Looking for where the music is? The first night of Fiesta de Los Reyes will see Proyekto Kumbia and Erick y Grupo Massore on the headliners' stage. 

On Saturday – Earth Day 2023 – take in San Antonio's natural majesty at the Mission Reach Flotilla Fiesta. On Sunday, gather the family and put a cherry on top of a Fiesta weekend at Fiesta de Los Niños, Fiesta Arts Fair or the Fiesta Carnival. Just be sure to hydrate, and don't forget your flower crowns.

Schoolhouse Rock Live! comes to the Magik

It's been 50 years since the enduring series of educational musical videos debuted, and young San Antonians this month have a chance to experience some of the most iconic entries – "Just A Bill," "Conjunction Junction" and "Interjections" among them – live on the children's theater stage. 

"Schoolhouse Rock Live!" was last at Magik in 2018. The production is a theatrical take on the Emmy-winning TV program, centering on anxious teacher Tom and his journey to regain his confidence as he begins his first day. 

Magik Theatre's show includes pre-scheduled performances featuring ASL interpretation (2 p.m. on May 6), sensory-friendly production (10:30 a.m. o May 24) and invitation for families to pay what they can to attend (2 p.m. on May 13 and June 3).

Paper Tiger hosts The Suffers

Twelve years after forming in Houston, self-proclaimed Gulf Coast soul group The Suffers will perform at Paper Tiger on Saturday evening, fresh off the release of their latest LP "It Starts With Love."

The Suffers frontwoman Kam Franklin has said "It Starts With Love" blends their east Texas roots with "our influences, anxieties, confidence, risk, fear and experimentation." Saturday's show will be on Paper Tiger's main stage.

SA Philharmonic unleashes the Fiesta vibes

The San Antonio Philharmonic's inaugural season continues rolling along with "Viva la Música," a two-show production the orchestra calls "a giant cascarón full of joyful musical confetti." 

 "Viva la Música" will be guest-conducted by well-traveled Brazilian conductor Lanfranco Marcelletti Jr. and feature guest flautist Elena Durán.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Celebrate Earth Day at a premier San Antonio museum

The landscapes and wildlife of the outdoors figure prominently into western art, and the Alamo City's foremost museum of that particular genre is set to celebrate all things nature and Earth on Saturday. 

The Briscoe's Earth Day programming is set to feature free arts and crafts activities for families, as well as "hands-on nature lessons" on bats, the enduring importance of plants and herbs, and skills for children to cultivate their own gardens. 

When: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday
