SAPD: Man charged in fatal shooting at illegal gambling house

Police say the victim was targeted for allegedly stealing money from a slot machine.

SAN ANTONIO — An arrest has been made in deadly shooting from last year at an illegal gambling house.

San Antonio Police responded to the 5500 block of Hayden Drive around 10:15 p.m. back on January 26 for reports of a shooting in progress.

Police say that the victim, 41-year-old Roland Garcia, was targeted for allegedly stealing money from a slot machine.

On Tuesday, Michael Gaitan was arrested on a murder charge after he was identified in a photo lineup, according to online court records,

According to an arrest affidavit, Gaitan lured the victim to a home used for gambling in order to assault him for stealing money on the day before.

At some point during the assault, a gun fell from Gaitan’s jacket and when the victim tried to grab it, the suspect picked it up and shot him twice in the stomach and head.

Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene, and multiple people taken in for questioning.

After interviewing several witnesses, investigators were able to determine that Gaitan had fatally shot him.

At this time, it’s unclear why it took police time a while to arrest Gaitan. He has been booked and remains in the Bexar County Jail.

Gaitan is expected to make his first court appearance at the end of May.

This is a developing story.
