Students ready to kick off 51st annual Walter Gerlach Livestock Show and Sale

After months of preparation, hundreds of Northside ISD FFA students are hoping their hard work will pay off, literally.

SAN ANTONIO — Hundreds of Northside ISD FFA students are ready to kick off the 51st annual Walter Gerlach Livestock Show and Sale in hopes of earning scholarship money for college.

Since 1973, the show has provided nearly $23 million to Northside ISD students to help pay for college. Students have a few moments in the spotlight to show off the animals they've worked with for months to impress the judge. The animals sold in the Gerlach show's auction earn money for their owners.

Hundreds of parents, family members and fellow competitors show up to watch the judging and to support the event.

Students who are able to place in the show have the ability to sell their animal in the auction. In 2023, the auction has a record year as it raised more than $1.5 million for students.

The event will take place from Saturday Jan. 20 to Saturday Jan. 27 at Steve Chumbley Park located on 18945 Babcock Road, about three miles outside of Loop 1604 off of Babcock Road.
