CANYON LAKE, Texas — Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
This week we went back to the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society (CLASS) and met Miles, a 9-month-old Australian Shepherd and Cattle dog mix that was saved from the euthanasia list and brought to CLASS about 23 weeks ago. Sadly, Miles has spent his entire life at a shelter inside a kennel after being brought to the previous shelter with his siblings.
Miles adores all dogs and will tolerate cats. However, shelter staff recommend that you introduce Miles slowly to any new friends.
"He does like to bite other dogs playfully, because he's quite mouthy, but takes very well to corrections," said Stacie Shmidl, from CLASS. "Especially ones that also like to roughhouse and run around with him. Now with cats, he would need some guidance on how he can play with them safely."
Miles is super friendly and really healthy. He is current on all of vaccinations, heartworm negative, on monthly heartworm prevention, microchipped and has been neutered. He currently weighs about 57 pounds, and is still growing!
"He loves anyone that will stop and pet him," said Stacie. "He is still very much a puppy and is still learning all of the appropriate behaviors."

Miles loves to play with toys. "He isn't picky with his toys, he loves them all," said Stacie. "He is also known as the 'toy thief' at CLASS. In fact, he uses his long, lanky legs to pull his neighbors toys through to his kennel so he can play with them."
That being said, he takes very good care of all of his toys (and the ones he collects).
Shelter staff believe that Miles would do best with an active family who likes to take a lot of walks, and already has another dog. Kids are okay too, as long as the family realizes that Miles is still a puppy and needs to learn not to jump on people and give them love bites. Miles does really well on a leash.
"Overall he is a silly boy with a sweet personality," said Stacie. "He is sure to provide plenty of laughs to his adoptive family because of his goofiness and clumsiness."
From what we understand, Miles also likes to dunk his feet into his water bowl while he is drinking.
Probably the best news of all is that Miles' adoption fee has been sponsored, so there is NO FEE at all to bring him home with you.

The normal adoption fee for dogs and cats is $150 and that includes:
- Spay/neuter prior to adoption
- Age appropriate vaccines
- Microchip
- Flea/tick prevention
- Heartworm test and prevention
