Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week, we went to the Animal Defense League on Nacogdoches and met an almost five-year-old super sweet American bulldog mix named May, who has been at the shelter for a little over two years, after being adopted from there once before when she was just a puppy back in 2019.

Sadly she was returned to the shelter in November of 2021 because she did not get along with their second dog and her family just couldn't take care of her anymore.

May's ideal home would be free of any felines and full of kids. She adores kids but just doesn't get along with cats.

"She doesn't mind interacting with other dogs and even likes to play with them from time to time, but would prefer to have the house to herself," said Jamie Gibson, Director of Lifesaving Initiatives at ADL.

May is healthy, has been spayed and is current on all of her vaccinations.

"May might bark in her kennel, but once she gets to know you she's a sweetheart who loves to just take naps next to her person," said Jamie. "She's very well-mannered inside but also enjoys outside time, especially if she gets to hang out and sunbathe."

Some of May's favorite things include playing with toys, playing fetch, and a good chew toy. She loves to be petted.

One of the reasons that shelter staff believe that May has not been adopted is because she doesn't show her very best in her kennel.

"She just needs a family to give her a chance to show them how amazing she is outside of the shelter and she'll be someone's best friend for life," said Jamie.

May is what the ADL calls a Diamond in the Ruff. Any pet that has been available for adoption at the Animal Defense League for four months or longer qualifies. That means ZERO adoption fees so you can spend more on toys, beds, and treats to spoil them in their new home!

If you want to help ADL rescue and treat more pets in need, they will ask for a monetary donation in lieu of the adoption fee for these pets. Every bit you donate contributes to saving the next life of the abandoned, abused, or neglected pets in our community that we see on a daily basis.

For whoever adopts May, Lucy's Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free "Glow Up" Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy's most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!

In an effort to Empty the Shelter, ADL has lowered the cost to adopt any pet over six months of age to just $35, until December 17.  But remember, if they are considered a "Diamond in the Ruff," there is no fee!
