Dig into some good ol' home-style cooking at Boerne restaurant | Neighborhood Eats

We went on a mission to find some of the best Texas Hill Country home cooking you'll ever taste!

SAN ANTONIO — We didn't drive far beyond San Antonio's city limits to find some of the best Texas Hill Country home cooking you'll ever taste!

"The Hungry Horse started in 1983 in San Antonio on Wurzbach and Evers," said restaurant manager Dennis Carpenter. "In 2001 we moved out here to Boerne, and we’ve just been chugging along here in Boerne ever since."

The Hungry Horse is just off main street, but easy to find across the street from the courthouse.

The Boerne restaurant fancies itself with home cooking, reasonable pricing and friendly staff. What else would one expect from dining deep in the heart of Texas?

"You get what you pay for," said customer, Lisa. "I always take it home and get at least one or two more meals out of it," she continued.

"It is huge!"

The Hungry Horse meatloaf is made fresh daily.

Carpenter said the main street retailers send lots of business their way and they have their regular customers so it's the perfect mixture of both.

"We really strive though to be the local spot," he said.

And of course the most important question on our hungry minds was what are the Hungry Horse signature dishes?

"Our very most popular dish is chicken fried steak," said Dennis. "Our second most popular is probably our fried catfish, and our burgers are very popular," he added.

We decided to taste test the top two suggestions with the addition of some meatloaf, suggested by an area foodie insider!

"Our catfish is domestic farm raised catfish that we hand bread in our own homemade cornmeal," said Dennis. "The meatloaf we make every day," he continued. "We mix a big ole twenty pound batch and it makes like eight pans of meatloaf. We sell pretty much a whole batch every day."

And last came the chicken fried steak, arguably the signature dish at the Hungry Horse.

"The chicken breast is hand breaded served with a homemade cream gravy," he said.

And that's what I'll say! Does it get more simple, but effective than that? Nope! I'm country born and raised, and I loved all three dishes, but it would be hard to ever go wrong with the chicken fry! Wow!

The Hungry Horse is located at 109 Saunders Street, again, just off Main in Boerne. The staff can also help with your catering needs! Check 'em out!
