Weather Minds: When it rains in San Antonio, it REALLY rains. Why is that?

You've heard about Tornado Alley. Now get ready to learn all about Flash Flood Alley.

SAN ANTONIO — You've heard of Tornado Alley, but did you know there's also a Flash Flood Alley? And yes, San Antonio sits right in the middle of it, along with New Braunfels, Austin and other communities that sit along I-35 up to Dallas.

That's due to our proximity to the Balcones Escarpment, which causes rain from the Hill Country to run off into our area. So it's not only the rain we get; it's the amount of rain that they get

So...how much did we get? So far this year, San Antonio is hovering right around its average up until this point, at 8.72 inches. That's only half the amount of rain that folks living in Austin have experienced.

How much water does that translate to? Let's put it into perspective: If you owned an acre of land and you received one inch of rain, that would be the equivalent of over 27,000 gallons of water. With the amount of rain we've seen so far in 2019, it's the equivalent of over 236,000 gallons of water.

Too complicated? Let's make it easier.

With that amount of rain that's fallen on San Antonio this year, you could fill up 2.5 million bottles of water. It's true what they say: When it rains, it sure does pour.
