1 dead, several others injured following explosion at Elmendorf railyard

First responders began arriving at the scene around 1 p.m. Friday.

ELMENDORF, Texas — Authorities say one person died and several others sustained injuries after a Friday afternoon explosion at a south Bexar County railyard.

The Elmendorf police chief later confirmed the victim was Gary Garza.

Officials say the cause of the explosion, which occurred at Alamo Junction Railyard in Elmendorf, is still being investigated.

“We don’t want to speculate on what the cause was at this time,” said Robert Hogan, fire chief for Bexar County Emergency Services District 10.

Hogan said that by the time they responded around 1 p.m., “most of the fire had been extinguished on its own,” but they were told flames at one point reached 30 feet into the air.

According to officials, the unidentified victim who died was recovered from the inside of an on-site tanker.

Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are also looking into the incident.
