'I have decided to bet on myself': UTSA defensive star entering the transfer portal

Moore was among the best defensive players in all of college football this season.

SAN ANTONIO — Just two players in all of college football recorded more sacks than UTSA's Trey Moore this season. Now Jeff Traylor will have to think about how to replace the redshirt sophomore's defensive production as his team prepares for the Frisco Bowl

Moore, a San Antonio native whose 14 sacks led the American Athletic Conference – no other AAC player tallied more than 9.5 – announced on social media that he's entered the transfer portal, the first step in transferring schools. He called his time at UTSA "years I will forever cherish," remarking the program has "shaped me into who I am today."

"As a man of God, I believe that when you are faced with opportunities to better yourself, you must accept the challenge," Moore went on to say Tuesday morning via X. "So I have decided to bet on myself... I hope all can understand and respect my decision."

Where that decision ultimately takes Moore remains to be seen, though the 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker's options have likely expanded after a campaign that culminated in AAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Moore was named a Freshman All-American following the 2022 season, as well as a selection on last year's Conference USA All-Freshman Team.

Junior Jimmori Robinson and senior Brandon Matterson were the only other Roadrunners to tally four or more sacks for the team this year; Moore's expected departure opens the door for Robinson to make even more of an impact when he suits up in 2024.

The announcement all but assures Moore will sit out the Frisco Bowl against Marshall on Dec. 19. UTSA, coming off an 8-4 campaign in its debut AAC season, is seeking its first bowl win in five tries.
