ARLINGTON, Texas — Smithson Valley had a magical season bookended by their only two losses of the year.

The second defeat stung more than the first.

Larry Hill's Rangers fell to Aledo, 51-8, in the UIL 5A-Division I title game—a David-versus-Goliath matchup that saw Smithson Valley turning heads early before Goliath reared its formidable head.

The Rangers started the game with a safety by Diego Davila to gain an early 2-0 lead. Their next offensive possession was capped off with a field goal by Clayton Amaya.

Their defense stayed hot midway through the first quarter when Zach Gingrich snagged an interception, leading to another field goal by Amaya to extend the Rangers' lead to 8-0.

But after that, it was all Aledo.

The Bearcats went on a tear, scoring the next 51 points to cap their undefeated season with a 12th state title, which is the most by any program in Texas high school football. The Rangers, meanwhile, have been defeated in four trips to the state championship, their last appearance coming in 2004.

Smithson Valley plans to remain in the mix next season as they continue hunting for the program's first state title.
