VERIFY | Did Delta Dental of California really have a data breach from the MOVEit file transfer program?

And did it affects customers in Texas?

SAN ANTONIO — There is so much information floating around on the internet when it comes to health insurance.

Keeping your health information private online can be a worry for some, and as we report in tonight's VERIFY, a data breach could have exposed some of your personal dental information.

THE QUESTION

That leads us to this claim, which comes from KENS 5 viewer Lea Englehart. She asked us, "Did Delta Dental have a data breach in the MoveIt file transfer software?"

THE SOURCES

  • Delta Dental of California and affiliates, which includes the State of Texas

THE ANSWER

This is true.

WHAT WE FOUND

We reached out to Delta Dental, which directed us to Delta Dental of California and affiliates, which includes the State of Texas.

They told us, "Delta Dental of California and affiliates was one of thousands of organizations impacted by a global data security incident resulting from a previously unknown vulnerability in the widely used MOVEit file transfer software, made by Progress Software. We are deeply committed to protecting the information entrusted to us and take issues like this very seriously."

They went on to talk about who may have been affected and said in a statement, "We recently concluded our extensive investigation and are in the process of notifying impacted individuals. To support the approximately 7 million impacted individuals, we are offering 24 months of complimentary identity monitoring among other services and resources."

So yes, it is true. Delta Dental of California and affiliates did have a data breach in the MoveIt file transfer software.

For additional information about the breach, you can check out their "Notice of MOVEit data security incident" which is posted on the homepage of their website.
