Woman in critical condition after shot by hitchhiker who asked for ride home, police say

She was the passenger in a car being driven by a man on the west side of town when they saw the suspect walking and she asked them for a ride.

SAN ANTONIO — A woman is in critical condition after being shot by a hitchhiker she and another man picked up while driving on the west side of town late Tuesday night.

Officers responded around 10:44 p.m. to the 4400 block of West Commerce for reports of a shooting in progress.

Police found the victims at a McDonald’s on West Commerce near Panuco Street.

A sergeant with SAPD says a man and a woman picked up a woman they saw walking on the side of the road and offered to give him a ride home.

The woman asked to be taken to an apartment complex on San Fernando and SW 26th Street on the west side.

The victim told police that when the group arrived at the complex, the woman pulled out a gun and demanded money from them.

The suspect was able to get a small amount of cash from the victims before shooting the woman in the front seat multiple times in her upper back and shoulder.

After the shooting, the woman ran off into the apartment complex.

The couple drove away and called police from the McDonald’s down the road where police found them.

Police say the woman, who is in her 20s, was shot multiple times and she is now fighting for her life at University Hospital.

Police did detain the driver for questioning.

Police also went back to the apartment complex to try and find the shooter, but did not locate him.

This is an ongoing investigation.
