Suspected car thief shot by Army veteran, shows up at hospital with gunshot wounds

Police say he may have been shot by homeowner while attempting to steal a car.

SAN ANTONIO — A possible car theft suspect walked into a neighborhood hospital with gunshot wounds, then collapsed, according to police.

San Antonio Police responded to the 6900 block of Caribou Creek near Gibbs Sprawl Road around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they were told by a homeowner that he confronted two suspects attempting to steal his car and opened fire on them, hitting at least one of the suspects.

KENS 5 spoke with the homeowner, Armand, who happens to be an Army veteran. He didn't want his face shown but was fine with having his first name published.

Armand said repeated Ring camera notifications alerted him of what was going on.

“Rolled over grabbed my phone, looked at the camera and saw a guy in a red hoodie in the back passenger side door of my truck," Armand said.

Armand grabbed his gun from the nightstand and rushed outside where he saw one of the red-hooded man making his way to the driver's side door of the truck.

Armand said the man's hand motion prompted him to pull out his gun.

“When he came around, my first thought is he has my gun and sure enough he had my gun and he had my bulletproof vest," Armand said.

He hit one of the suspects in both legs. Armand said he observed the wounded suspect fall in the middle of the street and being assisted by someone from the get-away car.

“Like I told the police, I was just like, 'Thank God I didn’t kill the guy,''' Armand said.

Police said the suspects drove away.

“I’m a Purple Heart vet out of the Army so when I went to Iraq, something like this was on the dinner table but I never expected to do nothing like this in my front yard and have to defend my home," Armand said.

The injured suspect was located after he walked into a Baptist neighborhood hospital on the 6400 block of Woodlake Parkway and collapsed. Police found the red car parked nearby at a Great Clips, but the other suspect was not found.

The injured suspect was taken to BAMC.

No other injuries were reported.

Armand told KENS 5 he thought the neighborhood he lives in was a place you could get away with leaving doors unlocked but not anymore. Armand also said since he doesn't subscribe to the Ring system, he doesn't have the capability to go back and watch the surveillance of the overnight attempted burglary.

“This was just the one day that they caught that one car that I just didn’t go through my SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) of getting out, making sure I had the guns secure with me.”

Armand said police recovered one of his guns that was in the truck near the hospital where the wounded suspect was found. His bullet proof vest was also returned.

SAPD are still looking for the second suspect.

This is a developing story.
