VIA to honor community leaders for their impact on local public transit at Hall of Honor unveiling

The pioneers who helped lead transit development efforts in the Alamo City will be honored by VIA Metro Transit.

SAN ANTONIO — Esperanza "Hope" Andrade and the late Marilyn Jones will be honored later this week for their influence and advocacy efforts toward the San Antonio transit system.

Andrade, a successful entrepreneur and businesswoman, will be recognized for her lifelong dedication to the San Antonio community and advocacy for public transportation, according to a VIA Metropolitan Transit press release. She served as the chair of the VIA board of trustees from 2015 to 2019 where she led innovative efforts that helped made the agency award-winning, according to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.

She has accumulated numerous other accolades and recognition for her work over the years, and was previously inducted into the Texas Transportation Hall of Honor in 2020.

Marilyn G. Jones, who passed away in 2019, was the founding chair of the board of VIA Metropolitan Transit Authority and trailblazer for the revitalization efforts of the city's bus system. Jones' innovation as a community leader is recognized as transforming the VIA agency into the self-sufficient agency that it is today, according to the transit company.

Her family will receive the honor on her behalf.

The VIA Metropolitan Transit Hall of Honor unveiling is set to take place at the VIA Metro Center on San Pedro Ave this Wednesday at 10 a.m.
