Vacant house fire on Monterey Street

SAN ANTONIO — A 2-story vacant home just west of downtown was damaged by a fire that broke out on Thursday morning, SAFD says.

San Antonio Fire Department responded to the 1800 block of Monterey Street near West Commerce Street around 10 a.m. for reports of a fire.

Crews made access to the second floor where they say the fire started in the corner of a room. The home is under renovation and the floors are being worked on, so there are holes in places and a couple spots where the floor is missing. Officials say this made it dangerous for firefighters working to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters were able to knock it down quickly and nobody got hurt.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. SAFD will be speaking with neighbors to see if anybody saw anything to report.

A neighbor told KENS 5 they have seen squatters at the home in the past.

The battalion chief said there is no electricity to the structure at this time. The home sustained significant damage but it’s not a total loss.

The battalion chief was not able to provide an estimate on the monetary amount of damage caused by the fire.

Officials did say that fires in vacant structures in our city are on the rise.
