New enrollment process in SAISD schools following 'rightsizing plan'

Last month, schools leaders voted to close several campuses after years of low enrollment.

SAN ANTONIO — Some families is San Antonio ISD are choosing where their child goes to school next year.

It’s the district’s latest effort to help students impacted by the recently approved "rightsizing plan."

Last month, schools leaders voted to close several campuses after years of low enrollment. The new enrollment process is part of the district’s empowerment plan.

This plan took effect after San Antonio ISD passed its consolidation package. Fifteen campuses will close in SAISD beginning next year.

This means many students will have to attend a new campus for school. Right now, the district is working with families on the choices available to them.

This includes attending the assigned school in their zone, transfering to a traditional neighborhood school, or applying for choice schools.

This can be done one-to-one with district staff or online through a new search engine.

“It's an electronic school finder where families can type in their address and find schools next to them and find out about the academic offerings and extracuricular activities that campuses offer so we are providing that one to one or the electronic resource that they can use should they want to explore that on their own before making a decision," said Eleanor Fernandez, Exec Dir. for Office of Access and Enrollment and rRtention.

The school finder launched on December 1 and the deadline to apply for the campus desired to attend is February 15.

Then students will go through a lottery process to determine which school they will go to.
