15 SAISD school campuses to close under district's 'right-sizing' plan

Under this plan, families will get the option to choose which school they want to go for the 2024-2025 school year.

SAN ANTONIO — The school board has spoken and 15 campuses will be closing in San Antonio ISD as part of the district's "right-sizing" plan.

The vote happened late Monday night after hours of passionate public comment. SAISD says its because of continual declining enrollment.

Hundreds of students in the district will now be heading to a new school soon.

The district’s transition plan starts Tuesday and it will begin working with students and teachers on next steps as they consolidate.

Superintendent Dr. Jamie Aquino says the district has created "school empowerment" teams to help with the transition. These teams will be made up of members of his executive cabinet and assigned to schools impacted.

Members will be talking to staff and families about next steps under the district’s "empowerment plan."

Its advertised online as a "VIP" customer service experience for SAISD families, empowering them to use their voice and make the best choice for their child.

Under this plan, families will get the option to choose which school they want to go for the 2024-2025 school year. This is not the only school district in San Antonio going through this process.

Edgewood ISD is set to make its final decision on whether to close two schools. The district’s Finance and Facilities Committee is proposing closing down Winston International School of Excellence and Wrenn Middle School.

The district is also considering consolidation to cope with declining enrollment.

That meeting is set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at their District Offices on West Commerce.
