Off-duty Bexar County sheriff's deputy arrested, fired after allegedly assaulting family member

Benjamin Morales, 21, had been employed since February.

SAN ANTONIO — An off-duty Bexar County deputy was arrested by police after authorities say he assaulted a family member. Given his minimal service time, he was fired immediately.

Benjamin Morales, 21, was assigned to the Detention Bureau after joining the Bexar County Sheriff's Office in February but was issued a "probationary termination" following his arrest, per agency policy. That means he was terminated right away since he was still in the probationary phase of employment with BCSO.

“This now former deputy knew the expectations upon him, as well as the ramifications of his actions," Sheriff Javier Salazar said in a statement. "The agency mission will continue without him.”

SAPD was dispatched to the 700 block of Carolina Street, close to South Cherry Street near downtown, around 7 p.m. Tuesday for reports of an incident, but no further details were shared by BCSO.

A separate but concurrent administrative investigation is underway, pending the outcome of the criminal case that is being handled by the SAPD.

Morales faces charges of assault bodily injury against a family member, a Class A misdemeanor offense, and remains jailed on a $2,500 bond. He's due in court on June 24.
