Murder charges dropped, investigation ongoing after man found shot in head

A woman called 911 saying a man had shot himself but an investigation revealed that the gunshot wound was not self-inflicted.

KERRVILLE, Texas — Murder charges have been dropped by police and the investigation is ongoing after a man was found shot in the head, police say.

On Dec. 16, around 5 a.m., Kerrville police officers responded to an apartment on the 2100 block of Singing Wind Drive in regards to 911 call from a woman saying a man had shot himself.

When police arrived, they made contact with the caller who was identified as a 26-year-old woman. Officers then located the man who had reportedly shot himself, 22-year-old Damon Anthony Michael Tampke, inside the apartment with a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities said a handgun was found in the apartment as well.

The woman was placed under arrest for murder, and booked into the Kerr County Jail.

Tampke was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to authorities, evidence gathered from the scene indicated that the gunshot wound was not self-inflicted.

Based on additional information developed during the ongoing investigation, the murder charge against the woman was dismissed and she was released from the Kerr County Jail on Sunday.

Police say their investigation is ongoing.
