'It's costing us money, it's costing us sleep' | Criminals target Southtown home for fifth time

The latest incident from Wednesday morning shows two criminals drive down an alleyway between Rische and Guenther

SAN ANTONIO — *This story has been updated to include information from San Antonio Police

A Southtown Family is planning extra security measures... for the fifth time.

On Wednesday, their cameras caught a man peering through their backyard fence trying to get in. What the family is trying to figure out is why their home appears to have been targeted.

The family shared a few of their security videos with KENS 5 that show different instances a stranger peeking through their back fence.

It's the fifth time they've experienced a crime like this, they tell KENS 5. Other times, they say, the criminals actually got onto their property and stole several items.

Exactly one week ago, we told you about a possible peeping Tom in Southtown.

On Wednesday morning, two minutes down the road in an alleyway between Rische and Guenther, another stranger was caught peering through a backyard gate before trying to get in.

"About 2:00, 2:30 in the morning [my sister] got the Ring camera notification," said Southtown resident Sebastian DeHoyos. "It's costing us money and it's costing us sleep, frankly."

DeHoyos, who lives in the home, says it appears his house was targeted. He just doesn't know why.

"They drove straight through [the alley]. They ignored this neighbor, that neighbor, that shack, went straight to our fence and immediately started messing with our gate and latch," he explained. "That's why I feel they had some sort of prior knowledge, otherwise I don't understand."

The suspect wasn't alone. In the surveillance video, another person is seen the passenger seat.

DeHoyos's siblings, watching the crime unfold through the Ring app on their phone, sounded the camera's alarm. Both suspects got away.

"We've had someone get into the backyard, steal some items. We've had several attempts to get in," said DeHoyos, an active military member who returned from deployment a year ago. "We've seen an insane uptick since about March 2023. We've had neighbors' windows busted in."

At this point, the family's frustrated wondering what else they can possibly do to feel safe again in their neighborhood.

"I feel like my siblings and my mom have typically been scared of things like self-defense, weapons, stuff like that. Unfortunately now, they're a lot more open to it," said DeHoyos.

In the meantime, DeHoyos said his family will install another light above the back fence and another security camera with a louder alarm.

"All of my neighbors are kind of at a consensus: We gotta take care of each other and be each other's immediate first responders until the police get here," said DeHoyos.

Last week, neighbors told KENS 5 police plan to step up patrols. DeHoyos told us their neighborhood also has a designated officer.

On Friday morning, San Antonio Police confirmed they are increasing patrols in the neighborhood surrounding Rische. A meeting is scheduled Friday evening between officers and neighbors to discuss safety matters in Southtown.

We're waiting for more information from Dr. Sukh Kaur, the City Council member who oversees this neighborhood, to see what other action can be taken.
