Man receives 70 years for shooting Balcones Heights police sergeant in 2021

His brother, meanwhile, is still awaiting trial after he was also arrested in February 2021.

SAN ANTONIO — More than two years after he shot a veteran sergeant of the Balcones Heights Police Department, Wilfredo Montemayor was sentenced to 70 years in prison Friday—a sentence that would keep him behind bars until he is nearly 100 years old.

“This case underscores that working in law enforcement is a dangerous job,” Bexar County DA Joe Gonzales said in a statement. “Upholding justice means protecting those members of law enforcement who are doing their jobs and risking their lives for the rest of us every day.”

Montemayor, who has since been convicted of attempted capital murder, is one of two suspects who was arrested in February 2021. That's when Balcones Heights Sgt. Joey Sepulveda was shot multiple times while investigating reports of vehicles being broken into on the northwest side. A second officer at the scene returned officer before dragging Sepulveda to safety, authorities said at the time.

Montemayor and his 30-year-old brother, Sijifredo Montemayor, managed to get away but were found and taken into custody in the following days. Wilfredo has already spent 37 months behind bars, and will be eligible for parole in 30 years. Sijifredo, meanwhile, is still awaiting trial.

Sepulveda recovered after spending a week in the hospital.
