TxDOT will close the 1604, I-10 intersection for fourth weekend next week. Here's why.

TxDOT has closed the 1604, I-10 intersection three weekends in a row, and will also close it next weekend, to place steel beams for a flyover ramp.

SAN ANTONIO — The Texas Department of Transportation closed the Loop 1604/ I-10 intersection for the third weekend in a row for construction this week. The closure will end Monday, Jan. 29, at 5 a.m.

On Friday, TxDOT confirmed a contractor is also requesting to close it next weekend as well. The change puts any through-traffic in the area on the access road and 1604 traffic will be forced to drive out of the way to either UTSA Boulevard or La Cantera Parkway to before drivers can get back to the highway.

The closure was necessary for TxDOT contractors to place the giant steel beams for the first "flyover" ramp in the intersection's new redesign which will connect eastbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10. TxDOT said Friday the ramp will require 30 such beams to support that ramp and contractors already have 10 cranes around the area to put them in place.

Each crane has a lifting capacity of up to 800 tons. Contractors had already placed 23 beams as of Friday and TxDOT hopes to place the other seven by the end of next weekend if the weather cooperates. TxDOT said the intersection must be closed so they can place the beams safely.

Drivers may get a break after Feb. 5 but TxDOT also confirmed contractors will again "require the full closure of the interchange on multiple, consecutive weekends", in "Spring 2024."

The Loop 1604/I-10 project is "Segment 2" in TxDOT's North loop expansion project.  TxDOT said Friday Segment 2 is 40 percent complete and drivers should expect to see the first of four flyover ramps completed "late this year."
