Spurs 126, Rockets 122: What they said after the game

San Antonio gets its first win of the new season.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs picked up their first win of the 2022-23 season at home against the Houston Rockets in front of a packed Frost Bank Center, 126-122, in overtime.

Victor Wembanyama had 21 points, and 12 rebounds while Devin Vassell added 25 points and three rebounds to lead the team. Keldon Johnson finished with 20 points and four rebounds while Tre Jones had six points and eight assists in the win. Cedi Osman had 14 points on the night.

The Spurs are 1-1 on the season, and will next visit the Los Angeles Clippers Sunday night.

Here's a sample of what the teams said after the game via the Spurs.

SPURS

Gregg Popovich

"We showed some composure and not so composed. and that's a work in progress. The best thing about it was they were persistent. We got better and better as we got adjusted to their [Houston] physicality. The ball moved better. Their defense improved a little bit."

Zach Collins

“I just felt all night we were going back and forth. We couldn't get a run. We couldn't get anything consistent going on both sides of the ball and we had to just crack down. We knew we couldn't just lose this game. It was a must-win for us.”

Jones

"I know we're doing everything we can to win. That starting lineup is ginormous. Jeremy [Sochan] is running the point very well. I feel like it's a little bit of a change but he is taking it very well."

Vassell

"I think we just stuck with it. They [Houston] pretty much had the momentum all game. I don't think we played that great of a game until the last half of the fourth quarter into overtime. We just kept preaching that we just got to stay with it and that's what we did."

Wembanyama

"It [win] just proves that we got it in us. I'm proud of what we did tonight but now we can really see where we can get better. We really haven't been pretty for three quarters. A win is a win but it shows that we have a lot of room to improve as a team."
