Save More, Spend Less on Fitness

For those who can't afford a gym membership, here are easy, fun and free exercises.

SAN ANTONIO — A lot of people make New Year's resolutions to get in shape, but also at the top of their list is to save more money.

For those who can't afford a gym membership or even personal training, there are easy, fun and free exercises to do in the comfort of your own home with basic items.

"If you have a pantry and you have food in it guess what, rice bags," Sherri Braxton, owner of Sherri Fitness, said.

She said one exercise you can do is a jump squat with a rice bag. She suggests holding it up a 90-degree angle, keeping your core tight, squatting at the bottom and jumping high at the top.

Water jugs are also items that people may have around their homes that make for great weights.

"People have to drink water at home, might as well use it to work out," Braxton said.

She suggests using the jugs for walking lunges. Keeping your back straight and your knees in line with your ankles when you lunge.

"Look straight ahead because the minute you look down, you're going to lose your balance," Braxton said.

You can also do another variation of jump squats using your kid's backpack, Braxton said.

Almost the same way as you would use a weighted vest.

"If you have a backpack at home stuff it with sand, books, anything heavy and do the workout," Braxton said.

If you can stay motivated and get creative with household items, you can get a workout in every day with no excuses and without spending at all.
