'Very sad to hear': Mobile home park residents react to discovery of women's body, which sparked hunt for husband

New video shared by one neighbor shows a heavy police presence at the mobile home hours before police and the suspect exchanged gunfire.

SAN ANTONIO — Neighbors in a south-side mobile home community are shocked after a murder investigation there led to a shootout with police at a shopping center Tuesday night.

San Antonio police said a husband murdered his wife Tuesday morning inside their mobile home at the Valley Ridge community off Southwest Loop 410. By Tuesday night, they tracked him down to a Subway off Vance Jackson near Interstate 10.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said that when officers approached the still-unidentified suspect in his vehicle, he shot at them. The officers fired back, killing him.

Paola Cervantes lived next door to the victim. She said the couple kept to themselves and had a middle school-aged child.

“It’s very sad to hear, especially for her child—I think her only child,” Cervantes said.

Investigators said the family had called police for a welfare check on the victim. Cervantes said she heard the family banging on the door, trying to get in before police did.

“Her sister tried calling her and she heard the phone in the house,” Cervantes said. “Her mother was crying for her name whenever they released her body from the house.”

Investigators have not released the name of either the victim or suspect, but according to the county medical examiner, both were 33 years old. Cervantes said she hopes the family can find answers and closure.

“It’s really hard, because you take life for granted,” Cervantes said.
