Some San Antonio ISD schools will be closed Wednesday

The city's third-biggest district announced the closures late Tuesday night.

SAN ANTONIO — Hours after apologizing to parents about preparations that "fell short" amid this week's freezing-cold weather and ensuring regular operations on Wednesday, San Antonio ISD officials said late Tuesday night that more than 20 campuses will be closed for repairs.

In a Facebook announcement, the district said the repairs were being made to "be able to confirm proper room temperature."

SAISD said campus administrators, custodial staff and child nutrition workers are still expected to report. These schools that closed Wednesday are:

  • Ball Elementary School
  • Bonham Academy (New)
  • Brackenridge High School
  • Carroll Early Childhood Education Center (New)
  • CAST Med High School
  • Cooper Academy at Navarro
  • Crockett Academy
  • Edison High School
  • Herff Elementary School
  • Hillcrest Elementary School
  • Huppertz Elementary School
  • Lamar Elementary School
  • Lanier High School
  • Lowell Middle School
  • Margil Elementary School
  • Maverick Elementary School
  • Ogden Elementary School
  • Poe Middle School
  • Rogers Academy
  • Sam Houston High School (New)
  • Travis Early College High School
  • Twain Dual Language Academy
  • Washington Elementary (New)
  • Whittier Middle School (New)
  • Woodlawn Academy
  • Young Women's Leadership Academy - Primary
  • Young Women’s Leadership Academy - Secondary

Later on Wednesday, the district said Lanier High School was releasing student early.

The district plans to give a news conference at 2 p.m. to give an update on the repairs and status of these school buildings. The news conference will be live-streamed within this article.

Meanwhile, SAISD said curbside meal service will go from noon to 1 p.m., and students don't have to be present at pickup.

Multiple parents told KENS 5 on Tuesday about potential heating issues at Highlands High School. One of them said her student's class had to be moved to the cafeteria because it was just 48 degrees in their classroom.

That parent called the school multiple times for answers and said the front office eventually told the heater was not working properly and the school called someone to fix it. She picked up her kids right away. As the day went on, other parents and guardians said there were no notifications for that campus; SAISD hasn't provided an official update about conditions there.

In his letter to parents, sent around 4 p.m., Superintendent Jaime Aquino said he was "not satisfied with how our day started," saying the district experienced "system failures, boilers that were slow to heat the buildings and water issues related to burst pipes."

More than 300 people had commented on SAISD's Facebook announcement Tuesday night, many of them expressing frustration that just some schools will be closed.

"San Antonio ISD do the right thing by closing all the schools and get it done rights the first time," one parent wrote. "Please let me know where I can send the bill when my child gets sick with the flu or a cold. And DO NOT punish us with attendance issues for your mistake."
