Pre-K students express themselves in art show and fundraiser

SAN ANTONIO — Some of the youngest San Antonians are stepping up to help other kids their age.

The City of San Antonio’s Pre-K 4 SA program is hosting a unique art exhibit fundraiser that celebrates children’s creativity while helping other kids in need.

It’s part of the Gracias San Antonio: Children are Citizens project, which is a year-long civic engagement event. It allows pre-k students to work on community issues and learn to make a difference to those around them.

The kids took a vote in November to support the Children’s Shelter this year. Throughout the year, they have been learning more about the shelter. At the same time, local artists have come to their classrooms to work with them in creating art pieces that represent San Antonio from a 4-year-old’s perspective.

“They've also been exploring the city with their families and their teachers, so we have something different than field trips. These are city explorations where the children and their families meet the teachers in different places around the city and learn about those, and then that becomes in the inspiration for these art projects that you see,” Sarah Baray, CEO of Pre-K 4 SA, said.

There are more than 100 pieces to choose from. The community is invited to the opening night and reception Thursday. It’s at the Mercury Project at 538 Roosevelt Avenue from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. People can bid on the art pieces until April 26.

The proceeds benefit the Children’s Shelter.
