Police arrest man suspected of shooting clerk at local food mart

Police say the girlfriend saw the video of the incident and called police saying, “I just saw my boyfriend on the news,” and identified the suspect.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police have arrested a suspect in a shooting at a local food mart on the northeast side back in May.

The shooting took place at the 12100 block of El Sendero at 10:24 p.m. on May 22.

Vikas Gohil, owner of El Sendero Food Mart, shared surveillance video of the incident where his 29-year-old employee was shot and rushed to the hospital.

In the footage, a masked and hooded man is seen entering the store, briskly roaming around before approaching the register and whipping out a gun on the clerk. Gohil noted his co-worker may not have understood the gunman's demands due to his limited proficiency in speaking English.

“My employee said remove your mask. That guy never listened to him and he asked about the money," Gohil said. “The guy pulled a gun and shot him. The bullet goes through outside toward the backside. That’s why he’s safe now. Otherwise, he getting problem.”

Gohil visited his co-worker at the hospital where he's recovering, talking and trying to keep strong.

“He’s always a happy guy. He made my customers very happy," Gohil said.  Justin May, owner of Lit Gardens, a cannabis store next door, is horrified by what happened.

"I just hope he gets better," May said.  He's invested in security, which monitors the entire lot.

“Little expensive but I have no problem to keep it safer," May said. Gohil believes the gunman should be caught and punished. “I’m going to pray for him also, bottom of my heart," Gohil said.

Police arrested Christian Loera, 19, in connection to the shooting. Police say the girlfriend saw the video of the incident and called police saying, “I just saw my boyfriend on the news,” and identified the suspect.

Police positively identified the suspect, Loera, and obtained a warrant for his arrest.

SAPD Street Crimes Unit found the suspect and brought him into custody on Wednesday, June 5.
