SAN ANTONIO — A number of area school district are closed on Monday for the total solar eclipse. However, students at North East ISD will report to class.
In Maria Guerrero’s 6th grade class, they learned about the eclipse ahead of the celestial event. It's part of her students schoolwork as Space and Engineering Technologies Academy (SETA) kids.
“I’m very excited about it,” said Michael Engelhardt.
“Hopefully it gets a lot darker,” said Alexa Lankford.
Parts of San Antonio will be in the path of totality. Krueger Middle School, where SETA is located at, is near the path but for some students not close enough.
“I might not be in class because I want to go to Comfort to see it,” said Engelhardt.
“Me and my family might go somewhere to see it better,” said William Waugh.
Lankford and several of her classmates mentioned they will be in class. NEISD schools have plans in place for students to see the eclipse during school hours. Safety glasses will be handed out for safe viewing. Several students just hope for clear weather.
“If it rains that is just going to be sad,” said Thamer Khoueldi.
“I’m going to be angry if there are clouds,” said Damian Castro.
After Monday, the next total solar eclipse in the U.S. won’t be until 2044, though not in San Antonio.
“I’m personally excited because it doesn’t happen that often,” said Waugh.
