Man who fired at SWAT officers to make first court appearance

This was the first shooting involving San Antonio police in 2024.

SAN ANTONIO — A man San Antonio police say fired at SWAT officers is set to make his first court appearance soon.

This was the first shooting involving San Antonio police in 2024.

43-year-old Jose Vasquez was with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office from April 2007 to August 2011, when he was arrested on official oppression charges and dishonorably discharged. The charge was later dismissed.

His hearing will be for multiple charges including aggravated assault against a public servant, as well as deadly conduct.

January 9, neighbors reported Vasquez was shooting a long gun inside his apartment on Timbercreek Drive.

When officers arrived, they say Vazquez started shooting at them, even hitting an SAPD patrol car. Officers then retreated, blocking off the area and calling for SWAT negotiators to take over.

Police say Officer Jesse Noriega was able to shoot the suspect, grazing his head.

Vazquez was treated at a hospital and is expected to be okay.

Officer Noriega was placed on administrative duty.

Officers were able to recover several guns from inside his apartment after the shoot out.

We will have updates following that pre-trial hearing
