Man charged with aggravated robbery in northwest-side shooting; victim recovering in hospital

Police say the 35-year-old victim returned fire with his rifle at the three suspects, who were attempting to steal a car from the driveway.

SAN ANTONIO — One of three suspects has been arrested and charged with aggravated robbery following a shooting on the northwest side early Saturday morning.

San Antonio police say 20-year-old Desmond Dillard turned himself into authorities on the day of the shooting which happened around 3:23 a.m. along the 6300 block of Bowman Ridge near De Zavala Road.

Police say the  35-year-old victim observed three individuals attempting to steal his car in the driveway on a surveillance video feed. The victim's mother told KENS 5 the man opened his front door and shouted at the suspects to "get away from his car."

According to police, at least one of the suspects shot at the victim, hitting him once in the chest. The investigation revealed the victim fired back at the suspects who ran away, leaving behind the stolen car they arrived in.

The gunshot victim was initially rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. According to his mother, parts of the victim's internal organs had to be removed and he continues to fight for his life. She said one of the bullets pierced the victim's back and traveled through the home, ending up in the back yard.

The victim's mother also said the suspects ducked behind the stolen Kia and began firing at her home and a neighbor's home.

Police are still searching for at least two other suspects.

One neighbor named Larry expressed frustration with the level of crime taking place across the city.

Larry has lived in the Ridge Haven neighborhood since 1998 and never has he witnessed such a large presence of first responders until just days ago.

“You heard all the helicopters and the commotion. From fire trucks to police officers to ambulance to you name it, we saw it,” Larry said. “If you go to commit a crime with a firearm, you better expect to face big boy consequences either from the homeowner or hopefully from the city.”

Dillard was booked in the Bexar County jail on a $60,000 bond. He made bail on Nov. 29, and has a pre-hearing set for Jan. 16.
