'My kids are hurting' | Father of three killed in southwest-side shooting

Investigators said Michael Hernandez is accused of killing 29-year-old Michael Ray Zepeda.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — San Antonio Police have identified the man charged with shooting and killing another man on the southwest-side Saturday morning.

Investigators said Michael Hernandez is accused of killing 29-year-old Michael Ray Zepeda.

The shooting happened before 8 a.m. off Excellence Drive near Old Pearsall Road, according to SAPD.

“Three times he was shot, three times,” Zepeda’s mother, Linda Arzola said.

Arzola said Zepeda was her first born. She spent Monday afternoon at a funeral home, having to make plans to lay him to rest.

“I’ve cried enough, I don’t want to cry no more but I know I’m going to cry more,” Arzola said. “My kids, my kids are hurting.”

Police said they got a call about a shooting at an apartment complex from a woman claiming her ex-boyfriend shot her current boyfriend multiple times in the stomach in the parking lot.

The family said Zepeda was not in a romantic relationship with the woman but was a close friend.

The accused shooter, Hernandez, ran from the scene but was later caught a mile away. Police said Hernandez and the woman had three children together but have been separated for more than a year.

“He was just a jealous man, he was envious that he couldn’t have her,” Arzola said.

Arzola said Zepeda was a loving father of three children himself who was training to become a personal trainer. She added he was funny, thoughtful, and forgiving.

“Our son would want us to forgive him,” Rafael Solis, the victim’s father, said.

But the family said even if they forgive the suspect, they still believe he should pay for the crime.

“That man robbed us from everything, he took everything,” Arzola said.

The family plans to lay Zepeda to rest in a week. The suspect remains in the Bexar County Jail with a $300,000 bond.
