Hamilton teacher surprises student with first-ever sledding trip

For many kids, the snowfall was an annoyance that nearly ruined Halloween. For Esteban, a sixth grader from Venezuela, it was a memory that will last a lifetime.

HAMILTON, Michigan — When a heavy snowfall barreled into West Michigan Tuesday, a Hamilton Middle School sixth-grade class couldn't take their eyes off the windows.

For one student in Katie Lillmars' class, it was a sight unlike anything he'd seen before.

Esteban, who is from Venezuela, joined Hamilton Community Schools just weeks ago. He told Lillmars it was the first snowfall he'd ever experienced.

The next morning, with snow still dusting the ground, Lillmars had a surprise for her class. She met her students at the door with a sled borrowed from another teacher — and a field trip Esteban will never forget.

"Since his arrival a few weeks ago, my class has shown so much compassion, kindness, and eagerness to learn his language and help him feel comfortable here in Hamilton," said Lillmars.

We're happy someone enjoyed the early snowfall, Esteban!
