Edgewood ISD considering closing down schools, also citing lower enrollment

The district says funding has been a challenge due to a decline in enrollment.

SAN ANTONIO — Another school district in San Antonio is considering closing some campuses.

Edgewood ISD held a public meeting Thursday evening to discuss what it's calling a "redesign plan."  The district says funding has been a challenge due enrollment declining by nearly 22% since 2017. According to Edgewood ISD, students occupy only 50% of the district's overall capacity.

The district’s task force led Thursday night’s presentation, going over recommendations the committee put together over the last two months. They said they're considering 11 different options. Among them: Closing and combining various campuses.

"This is a change and we know that any change affects people emotionally. We take that into consideration as we ask people to come along with us on this walk that is not going to be an easy walk, (but one) we must take at this time," Superintendent Eduardo Hernandez said.

This data is coming from areas of the district officials were tasked with reviewing, which includes location of schools, student enrollment, building conditions, classroom instruction and funding.

The task force, made up of district teachers and parents, will continue sharing their findings with the public at two more community meetings on Friday and Monday.

In a statement, the district told us the direct impact to schools will be minimal, as the focus is one providing the best opportunities and resources to students.

Edgewood ISD is a district with a little over 8,000 students over 20 campuses.
