Big rig filled with 'condemned vegetables' breaks open on I-35, causing major delays

The trailer being towed was carrying vegetables that had been condemned and quarantined by Homeland Security.

SAN ANTONIO — A crash involving a big rig carrying "condemned vegetables" near I-35 and Space Center happened early Tuesday morning, causing major delays.

Officials say a tractor-trailer struck a signal truck that was at the end of a sweeper convoy. The trailer being towed was carrying vegetables that had been condemned and quarantined by Homeland Security. Officials say the vegetables possibly contain insect larvae inside.

The Texas Department of Transportation towed away the tractor and signal truck, but the trailer broke open. A hazmat crew was needed to clean the area.

The drivers of the two vehicles were not injured but were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The accident is expected to keep the highway closed for another 4-5 hours as of 11:30 a.m.
