5 things to do this weekend: Poteet Strawberry Festival kicks off; San Antonio Book Festival to showcase emerging authors

Whether you’re a fan of sports, comedy or books, there is plenty happening this weekend that you and the whole family can enjoy.

SAN ANTONIO — With Fiesta just a week away, the list of events happening across San Antonio is soon to be endless. But if you’re hoping to get out this weekend with friends and family, here are a few of the things going on from April 12-14 for you to choose from.

77th Annual Poteet Strawberry Festival to be a BERRY good time in South Texas

The Poteet Strawberry Festival returns this weekend to the “Strawberry Capital of Texas.”

For over 77 years, the Poteet Strawberry Festival has been a major economic generator for south Texas and Atascosa County. The festival’s goal is to promote Poteet’s premier strawberries and use proceeds from the event to fund scholarships, farmers, non-profits, and small-businesses.

Festival goers can enjoy the carnival grounds, plenty of delicious strawberry-themed food and drinks, a variety of on-site vendors, live music from an impressive lineup of performers (see full schedule, here), and live fireworks!

The festival kicks off this Friday and runs through the entire weekend.

When: Friday, April 12 - Sunday, April 14

Where: 9199 N State Hwy 16, Poteet, TX 78065

Cost: Admission tickets are required for all ages 13 years of age and up. Military members get in free with valid ID. You can get discounted prices on tickets by purchasing them online. Tickets for Friday night (KENS5 night!) are $10 per person. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday are $20 per person. More information on ticket prices can be found here.

‘Anything for Selenas’

It’s a film many of us can recite line for line. “Selena,” the 1997 biographical drama portraying the career and tragic death of Tejano legend and Texas native Selena Quintanilla-Perez, will be screened at a free community event on Friday. Just in time to celebrate the late singer’s life and legacy before her birthday on April 16.

H-E-B Cinema hosts the outdoor film screenings at Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza at The Tobin Center on the second Friday of most months The full list of movies set to be screened, along with guidelines for what you can expect, can be found here.

The event will take place rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the screening will take place indoors. Full concessions and bar will be available.

When: Friday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m.

Local bookworms come together for a day of literary fun

Aimed at celebrating ideas, books, libraries, and literary culture, the 12th Annual San Antonio Book Festival will bring together readers and writers and highlight emerging authors on Saturday.

The festival will feature nearly 100 national, regional, and local authors and 66 sessions for guests to attend.

Some featured authors will include Al Rendon, Ben Fountain, Becky Albertalli, Carmen Tafolla, and many more. See the full list of authors.

Don't worry, be fluffy

Also happening Saturday, stand-up comedian and actor Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias is making a stop at Frost Bank Center for his Don't Worry, Be Fluffy Tour.

The California native has produced several stand-up specials for Comedy Central and Netflix and appeared in multiple film and TV projects both live-action and animated.

If you're looking for a good laugh, Frost Bank Center is the place to be Saturday night.

When: Saturday, April 13 at 8 p.m.

Brahmas take on the Battlehawks at the Alamodome

If you're more of a sports fan and you're missing football season, consider attending this weekends San Antonio Brahmas game as they go up against the St. Louis Battlehawks.

The team currently has a 2-0 record, building momentum as the UFL hopes to prove itself a spring football league worth the watch.

When: Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m.

Where: Alamodome (100 Montana St)

Spurs fans can catch two games this weekend at Frost Bank Center as the team returns home to play the Denver Nuggets on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Detroit Pistons on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services is hosting the Paw-Changa Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a goal of finding loving homes for over 100 pets.

Attendees will be able to enjoy live-performances and family-friendly fun, as well as vendors and an opportunity to collect the official 2024 San Antonio Animal Care Services Fiesta Medal.

Finally, the Alamo Colleges District is holding their Fiesta SATX Short Film Festival on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to showcase local indie short filmmakers and elevate their projects to contribute to the growth of the industry.
