5 things to do this weekend: Viva Poesía honors historic Mission Drive-In, Blue Star ‘First Friday Art Walk’

Here are a few family-friendly events you can take part in this weekend, just ahead of the Monday eclipse extravaganza.

SAN ANTONIO — Solar eclipse day is almost here! As surrounding cities prepare for the stream of eclipse viewing parties and influx of visitors expected on Monday, here are a few things you and the family can enjoy right here in the Alamo City this weekend, from April 5-7. 

Blue Star Arts Complex's holds monthly "First Friday Art Walk"

If you didn't know, every first Friday of the month the Blue Star Arts Complex hosts San Antonio's longest-running monthly art event.

The First Friday Art Walk was established in 1994 and founded by local artists, starting out with just a few artist-run studios. The event has since evolved to what is now an entire neighborhood experience.

Studios and galleries are open complex-wide for the event. Guests can also expect art vendors and live music.

When: Friday, April 5 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Where: Blue Star Arts Complex (1414 South Alamo Street)

Cost: Free to attend

The 10th Annual Viva Poesía Festival kicks off National Poetry Month in San Antonio

Mission Marquee Plaza is set to kick off National Poetry Month in San Antonio in a big way Saturday with the 10th Annual Viva Poesía Festival.

This year's theme is "Confluence of the Creative Arts," inspired by the surrealist exquisite corpse game.

The festival will unite local poets, visual artists, and San Antonio United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chef Ambassadors, to craft poetry, show off visual art, and hold live cooking demonstrations, along with tastings that will surprise and spark the imagination.

The event will feature live music, make-and-take art activities and a tree adoption of 400 fruit trees (given away on a first-come first-serve basis by the San Antonio Parks & Recreation Department).

Pop-up vendors will be on-site and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

When: Saturday, April 6 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Where: Mission Marquee Plaza (3100 Roosevelt Avenue)

The Dog Days are not over for the San Antonio Zoo

If you're looking to bring your fur-babies along with you for some weekend fun, the San Antonio Zoo is hosting Dog Day.

You can bring your dogs for a day of fun as they explore the the zoo grounds, adding an extra touch of excitement and curiosity to the atmosphere.

When: Sunday, April 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: San Antonio Zoo (North Saint Mary's Street)

Cost: Guests must purchase a $27.99 Dog Day Ticket for each dog, in addition to either purchasing zoo admission or presenting their Membership for entry.

Enjoy an evening of enchanting music from international award-winning artists

As Catholic mass concludes at San Fernando Cathedral on Sunday night, Hungarian composer Roby Lakatos & His Ensemble will make their San Antonio debut with one-of-a-kind fusions of contemporary, classical and jazz elements with the folklore traditions of Hungarian Romani people.

The event is part of the RHR Musical Evenings at San Fernando Cathedral collection, a free concert series that merges the historic architecture of the nation’s oldest continuously operating Catholic sanctuary with enchanting music of some of the finest, award-winning artists from around the globe.

When: Sunday, Apr. 7 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Where: San Fernando Cathedral (115 Main Plaza)

Cost: The event is free but you must have a ticket for entry.

Put on your Spurs gear and cheer on the team as they take on the 76ers

You can purchase tickets for the family to catch a Spurs game as the Silver & Black returns home to Frost Bank Center this Sunday, going up against the Philadelphia 76ers.

And don't forget to watch Friday night's Spurs game on KENS 5 as they take on the Pelicans in New Orleans!

When: Sunday, Apr. 7 at 6 p.m.

Where: Frost Bank Center (Frost Bank Center Drive)

Cost: You can purchase tickets to the game through Ticketmaster. Prices start as low as $20 each.

Comedian David Lucas, known for his quick-witted jokes and vicious roasting, will take the mic at the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club through the weekend. You can purchase tickets on the comedy club's website.

If a morning farmers market is more your style, you can check out the Farmers & Artisans Market happening on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Also happening Saturday, get immersed in French culture right here in the Alamo City at the International School of San Antonio's Francofun Festival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free but RSVP is required.
