Free cooking classes offer ways to manage Type 2 diabetes

Comal County is offering free cooking classes especially for people with diabetes to improve the diets of people living with the disease.

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Comal County is offering free classes to help people manage Type 2 diabetes.

On Wednesday night, the extension office held its first class. Krystal Snider, an extension agent, will be focusing on medications, nutrition, complications and ways to control blood sugar levels. She said that the students who take the classes are interested in learning more about the disease and ask questions they haven't had a chance to ask with their doctor.

"Think about how much time you get to spend with your doctor. At a doctor's visit it's about 10 to 15 minutes, so people have a lot of questions," Snider said. "We're all here to learn together and learn from one another. Not only am I teaching, but I'm also learning from my students because they deal with this on a daily basis."

Kathy Jordan, a participant in the class, has Type 1 diabetes.

"Diabetes, trying to manage it, is just diet. But it is more complex than what it appears to be. So the more you learn about it, the better," she said.

The free classes are 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday from February 21 to March 21 at the Comal County Extension Office, 325 Resource Drive, New Braunfels. You can register by calling 830-620-3440.

Extension Agent Connie Sheppard will teach a five-part monthly healthy cooking class beginning Friday, Feb. 23 and it will last until June 23. These classes will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the fourth Friday of each month at Partners in Primary Care Wellness Center. It's located at 1860 S. Seguin Ave., Building D. You can register by calling 830-620-5626.
