George Gervin Academy celebrates grand re-opening of Blanco campus, complete with Spurs Coyote appearance

The school also revealed the design for its upcoming playground.

SAN ANTONIO — Community members gathered at the north side's George Gervin Academy to celebrate its grand re-opening and get a sneak peek at the new playground coming to the Blanco Road school in the next few weeks.

Families were able to tour the campus, visit with school leaders, enroll their children and learn more about support systems provided at El Hombre de Hielo Campus, which services pre-K through the fifth grade.

“We didn’t have the opportunity to do the big grand re-opening we were hoping for," said Superintendent Nathan Hawkins about not being able to celebrate the campus's opening, which happening during the pandemic. "We want to make sure kids leave here with the proper education, (and) are able to tackle life’s problems in the future.”

Gervin opened the school in 1995 with his sister, Barbara Gervin Hawkins; it offers kids a tuition-free, dual-language academy, as well as free transportation and meals across three San Antonio campuses.
