SAN ANTONIO — A woman was struck and killed by a patrol car during a police pursuit Friday night, authorities said.
According to officials San Antonio bike officers responded to an aggravated robbery around 8 p.m. on E. Martin Street.
A man and woman said they were approached by two suspects in dark hoodies with a gun. The suspects demanded the woman's purse and the vehicle. The woman gave them her purse and keys and the suspects drove away in the victim's vehicle, police said.
The stolen car was able to be tracked using GPS and was located by police officers who attempted to stop the driver before the driver fled and got away.
A few hours later around 10:30 p.m. officers again located the car and attempted to stop the driver.
The driver fled and during the high-speed pursuit a female pedestrian who was walking in the street was hit by one of the patrol cars, according to authorities.
The officers stopped to render aid but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
A suspect was captured at a nearby location after abandoning the car and fleeing on foot.
Rene Camarillo, 17, is facing charges of murder, aggravated robbery and evading arrest, police say. The murder charge is stemming from Camarillo's alleged action causing the crash that led to the pedestrian's death, they said.
The officer involved in the crash has been put on administrative duty until further notice.
The female pedestrian was identified by the medical examiner as 47-year-old India F. Watson.
KENS 5 reached out to the San Antonio police department for comment. They responded with this statement..."Both the SAPD Traffic Investigation Unit and the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct separate, concurrent investigations. Their findings will be sent to the District Attorney's Office for an independent review. SAPD's policies and procedures are posted online."
