Here's how many DWI arrests San Antonio police made over New Year's weekend

Among the arrests was one prominent city leader who has since posted bail.

SAN ANTONIO — Police arrested more than 90 drivers for getting behind the wheel after having too much to drink over the holiday weekend, according to numbers released by the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD).

Ninety-three people in all were taken into custody after allegedly driving while intoxicated in the Alamo City between Friday and Monday, despite SAPD reminding commuters not to take the risk. Of those 93 arrests, 51 are facing DWI charges for the first time; in Texas, conviction means a fine of up to $2,000, a jail stint of up to 180 days and potentially losing your driver's license for up to a year.

Ten drivers arrested over the weekend have been convicted of DWI at least twice before; seven had a child under 15 years of age in the vehicle with them; and 10 had a blood alcohol content of 0.15, nearly twice the legal limit and enough for a more serious, second-degree misdemeanor charge. Four were allegedly driving with an open container in their vehicles.

New Year's Day was the busiest day for SAPD, when officers arrested 34 people for DWI and DWI-related charges.

Among the dozens of holiday-weekend arrests was District 10 City Councilman Marc Whyte, who was taken into custody Friday after being pulled over on the north side and showing signs of intoxication, according to SAPD. Online court records indicate he was released the next day on bond.

The legal limit in Texas is 0.08.
