Man arrested in connection to deadly hit and run from 2022 on city's west side

Authorities said the victim was riding his bike when he was struck by a car and the driver did not stop to render aid.

SAN ANTONIO — A man was arrested on Thursday in connection to a deadly hit and run crash that happened back in 2022 on the west side.

Kenneth Relitz faces charges of collision involving death.

In September of 2022 police responded to a major crash around 9:45 p.m. on Culebra Road near Grissom Road.

Police found a man identified as Geoffrey Shafer, 38, in the street when they arrived at the location.

Shafer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said Shafer was riding his bike when he was struck by a car and the driver did not stop to render aid.

According to an arrest affidavit, the next day a woman reported a white Volkswagen appeared to be involved in a crash and was parked at the intersection of Cornudo Ridge and Laguna Rio. The woman said the car's windshield and the top of the car was damaged.

The woman gave the license plate number to the authorities and police were able to track down the abandoned car.

The police ran the license plate number and it was determined to be stolen. The car was unlocked and the keys were found in the passenger seat.

Investigators also found blood inside the car. Investigators believe the damage from the windshield could have injured the driver during the crash.

The car also had residue of paint that matched the bicycle Shafer was riding when he was struck. The front bumper also had a bicycle tire imprint. Police said the damage is consistent with the car striking a person on a bicycle.

The registered owners identified as Relitz and his wife were located and both provided a sample of their DNA. A warrant was issued for Reltiz after his DNA matched the sample taken from the car.

Relitz is in jail on a $75, 000 bond.

No other information was provided.
