'I'm just happy to be alive' | Security guard shot five times while preventing robbery at cannabis dispensary

On Monday, Jonah Duran was able to speak and walk for the first time since the shooting.

SAN ANTONIO — A security guard shot multiple times while on the job is speaking out from his hospital bed. The shooting itself was captured on surveillance video Saturday morning.

It happened at Purple Dragon Cannabis Dispensary on West Hildrebrand Avenue.

Jonah Duran was able to speak and walk for the first time since the shooting Monday. He said he does not remember much about the incident.

“I’m just happy to be alive,” Jonah said.

Jonah had been working at his cousin’s shop as an armed security guard for a few months. He said he knew of the risks that came with the job. However, his mother, Nancy Duran, never expected him to be caught up so quickly in a life-threatening situation.

“It’s very hard for me right now,” Nancy said.

Around 3 a.m., San Antonio police said three men attempted to rob the dispensary. Two of them were armed. Jonah acted quickly and started shooting at one of the suspects who returned fire. That gunman fell to the ground and was hit. He was eventually taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The other gunman fired off a few rounds before taking off with a third suspect.

Jonah was shot five times, according to his mother.

“Three in the neck, once in the hand and once in the leg,” Nancy said.

He was rushed to the hospital and immediately went into surgery for hours. His mother said she has been by her son’s side the entire time.

“I’m very grateful that they didn’t kill him,” Nancy said.

Jonah has three children including an 8-month-old. Nancy said Jonah lost his dad at a young age and could not imagine what would happen if he was not able to be there for his own children.

“I’m happy I’m still able to be around my kids,” Jonah said.

Nancy Duran said she wants the three men involved to be held accountable but at the same time is praying the gunman who was hospitalized is okay.

“I just to pray to God people have learned a lesson from this,” Nancy said.

Police have not released any new information about the other two suspects who fled the scene.

If you would like to help the Duran family, they are raising funds through GoFundMe.
