NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Our "Forgotten Friends" series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
On this week’s Forgotten Friends we meet Rockie, a one to two-year-old terrier pitbull mix that was found running loose as a stray in a New Braunfels park and brought to the Humane Society in New Braunfels (HSNBA) back in January. Sadly, nobody ever claimed him. He is currently the longest staying dog at the shelter.
"We couldn't figure out why he wasn't getting adopted so last weekend, our Dog Program Manager took him home for a long weekend sleep over," said Sarah Hammond, Executive Director HSNBA. "He did great with her dogs and with her cat, and didn't even bother the chickens she keeps."
She even made him a cute little report card to show how he did!
She discovered that Rockie is just about the perfect dog! He likes cats, other dogs and doesn't mind chickens. He's potty trained, crate trained, likes toys and loves to cuddle. He warmed up to strangers quickly is good on a leash and really likes to ride in cars.
He weighs in at about 50 pounds and is is healthy, vaccinated, microchipped, heartwarm negative and neutered.
"Rockie can be just a little bit standoffish with new people which may be why he has been here so long, but once he knows you, he's a great little dog," said Sarah.
His adoption fee is only $17 if you adopt him before the end of March, because HSNBA is celebrating "St. Pittie's Month" and all of their adult pit bull mixes are only $17 to adopt until the end of the month.

CLICK HERE to see what they need most. Two things they really need right now are potty pads and peanut butter! They use the peanut butter to stuff puzzle toys. It gives the dogs something fun to do while they are stuck inside due to the cold. Just make sure it doesn’t have xylitol in it which is toxic to dogs!
As with all shelters, cash is always appreciated, since money comes in handy to pay the veterinary bills associated with saving all the animals in need.
