TEMPLE, Texas — April Fools!
April 1 has come and gone, bringing out the prankster in people across the United States. Even here in Central Texas, multiple cities, and even TxDOT themselves, got into the fun, sharing their own pranks and jokes on social media.
Here are some of the fun ways Central Texas got into the spirit of the season.
Belton, TX
The City of Belton kicked off April Fools' Day by sharing an important new traffic update, the installation of a disco ball on top of the flagpole at the roundabout on Sparta Road.
The City said they would be pointing the street lights at the disco ball in order to "make it funky to use the roundabout at night".
For best results, the City recommended using the roundabout while listening to "Boogie Down" or "Funky Town".
Even more amusing, some comments on the post were in favor of the change.
Hewitt Police Department
You may have heard of police dogs, but this April 1, the Hewitt Police Department announced the addition of a very unique member of the force, a K9 Komodo Dragon!
According to the department, the enormous lizard was trained on the islands of Indonesia, and can even sniff out drugs.
The department topped off the joke with a photoshopped picture of an officer walking the komodo dragon, who was even wearing its own police vest, on a leash.
Temple, TX
Discover Temple used April Fools' Day as an opportunity to promote a little-known local stop.
Discover Temple shared that a "small, local gas station" would be changing its name to honor residents of the city. The Buc-ee's, located along General Bruce Drive in Temple, would be rebranded as "Tem-Buc-2" in honor of its location.
A post on social media even shared the famous beaver mascot standing in front of the popular stop, whose sign had been edited to show off the new name.
"I don't know what you are talking about," one local resident reportedly said about the name change.
TxDOT
Even the Texas Department of Transportation itself wasn't above having a little fun for April Fools' Day.
TxDOT announced in a social media post that it would be turning off the sun from around 1:30 p.m.-2 p.m. on April 8 for "road maintenance". Drivers were asked to plan accordingly.
While it may not be TxDOT's doing, the sun will go dark on April 8, which also led into another local city's prank...
Killeen, TX
The City of Killeen celebrated April Fools' by thanking the residents and visitors who joined them in celebrating the total solar eclipse on March 31.
In a post on social media, the City said the once-in-a-lifetime event "delivered on the magic" as the skies dimmed for over four minutes, casting a "spellbinding" shadow over the city.
Not only this, but the City said the best part was that residents were prepared, having filled up their vehicles, stocked up on groceries, eased network congestion by communicating through text and helped emergency response teams by staying at home to celebrate.
The City gave a shoutout to everyone who wore the eclipse glasses they received from the Killeen Civic and Conference Center and who attended informational sessions at the Killeen Main Library or Copper Mountain Branch Library.
Thankfully, the post was only a joke. The eclipse will actually take place on Monday, April 8, though the prank still served as a way for the City to remind residents and visitors of tips that can make the event flow more smoothly for everyone.
