What to do if your pet is lost after New Year's fireworks

"Usually the day after the 4th of July and the day after New Year's, you see hundreds and hundreds of lost and found dog posts," said Jenna Loos, a dog trapper.

SAN ANTONIO — The pops and blast of New Year's Eve firework celebrations can frighten animals, making some run away.

"A lot of them are really afraid of them. They'll try and hide. They'll try and run. They'll jump and break out of fences," said Jenna Loos, a dog trapper.

Loos says this is a time of the year, we see a spike in lost pets.

"Usually the day after the 4th of July and the day after New Year's, you see hundreds and hundreds of lost and found dog posts," said Loos.

Loos says if you lose or find a pet, your first tool is social media. Loos also says traditional paper fliers still work. Another trick Loos says you can use is appealing to your animal's sense of smell.

"When they get out, they tend to circle back. So maybe getting a blanket that they like, or a shirt that smells like the owner, and actually putting it outside on the front porch," said Loos.

Loos says you should make sure your pet is microchipped, and have a collar with a tag, that has your contact information. San Antonio Animal Care Services will chip your pet for free, if your a resident. It's only a $5 fee, if you live outside the city limits.  You do have to make an appointment. Chips can also be useful if you find a lost pet.

"Take them to any vet clinic, or any Petsmart. They'll check for that microchip. They'll call and they will, hopefully be able to get ahold of the owners," said Loos.
