St. Philip's College holds 29th annual CultureFest and Rib Cook-Off

The growing Fiesta event uses the opportunity to have an open house for prospective students.

SAN ANTONIO — We're past the mid-way point of Fiesta with just two more days to go after Thursday.

St. Philip's College made their Fiesta mark once again today with an event that gets bigger and bigger every year: The 29th annual CultureFest and Rib Cook-Off. But it isn't just about ribs. There's a whole lot else going on too.

First we bounced on over to a car show with an old maroon car, a green old ride next to a modern day bike, a purple car, a black car, a car with dice, and this 1998 mustang with a Fiesta theme.

Arthur Guajardo from San Antonio told us, "I love my baby, man. That's been having a '98 Mustang all my life. I've been wanting a mustang all my life, and I finally got it."

"It took us months of man hours with a lot of different students, and we're honestly pretty proud of our work here," said Santos Reyna who is the President of the school's welding club.

They made these grills which are being raffled off. Reyna added, "We have the smoker pit. It's just a normal grill. On the second one, we have our standing smoker that has a lot of different levels in it. And then our third one is our cowboy pit that goes up and down depending on the type of meat that you want to use."

Those grills are bussin'! But the signature event at CultureFest is the rib cook-off.

Dr. Adena Williams Loston, St. Philip's College president said, "We asked people to prepare ribs, their best recipe. And then we have our culinary faculty, and then we have some celebrity people that are serving as judges to make the selection about the best ribs."

The school also uses this event to hold an open house to help direct future students to help them meet their goals.

Dr. Loston added, "This year we have the largest participation. We have over 800 students from different school districts that are here to learn about careers at St. Phillips College."
