Inventor creates a way to protect packages from porch pirates

You can't always stop a thief, but you can protect what you order online.

SAN ANTONIO — A new law that went into effect on Sept. 1 makes it a felony to steal anything considered mail. That includes letters, postcards, packages and other sealed items.

Even with this stronger penalty, some porch pirates may still test their luck.

Gopal Nandakuma is an inventor in San Antonio. After a few years of hearing about people having issues with their packages being stolen, he decided to do something about it. He created a lock box with a digital lock. The person delivering your mail enters a code based off the package's tracking number to open the lock box.

"I have not experienced porch piracy, but still, when I hear that, I don't want to place an order online," Nandakuma said. "This gives me the confidence to place online orders."

Nandakuma has two types of lock boxes installed at his home. The larger option connects to his front window and the package can be pulled directly through it. Nandakuma said most customers prefer this option for its convenience. There's also a smaller lock box that can be attached to an exterior wall.
