Conversations surrounding border policy continue this weekend near Eagle Pass

The 'God's Army' convoy passed through San Antonio Friday, heading towards Quemado near Eagle Pass.

SAN ANTONIO — The 'God's Army' convoy is near Eagle Pass Friday night, preparing for a rally Saturday afternoon.

The group passed through San Antonio Friday afternoon, heading towards Quemado, which is less than 30 minutes from Eagle Pass.

"We're just going to come down," said Shelly Grunden with the Alamo City Trump Train. "This is going to be as peaceful as possible. We're not associated with any groups as extremists as they like to call us."

Grunden plans to join the convoy tomorrow to support their mission to 'Take Our Border Back.'

"We support Governor Abbott and what he's doing for the border," Grunden said. "We're glad he's locking it down and we want everyone to come here, but we want them to come here legally and in the right way. And for the right reasons.”

Gov. Greg Abbott has deployed the Texas National Guard to secure the border, preventing people from illegally crossing. President Joe Biden claims Abbott is defying the Supreme Court's decision - which ruled the U.S. government, not Texas, has authority over the border.

"As an evangelical pastor, I'm quite bothered by the story that I hear coming from this group," said Pastor Doug Pagitt.

Pagitt is the executive director of Vote Common Good, who is visiting from Minnesota in support of local pastors.

"We want to make sure that people know that both Christians and non-Christian Americans want our borders to be places where people can enter this country safely and consistently because immigration is crucial to this country,” he said.

Pagitt stands by President Biden's approach to border policies. He's hoping conversations this weekend remain peaceful.

"We want them to know that we're going to be engaging with them in conversation and information exchange over the next few hours, today and tomorrow," Pagitt said.

Following the rally Saturday, Governor Abbott will join 14 other governors at Shelby Park for a news conference on Sunday.
